AFCON 2025 Postponed to January 2026 Due to FIFA Club World Cup Scheduling Conflict
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), originally slated to take place in Morocco later this year. The tournament has been rescheduled to January 2026 due to a scheduling conflict with the FIFA Club World Cup.
CAF cited the overlap between the two major football events as the primary reason for the decision, emphasizing the need to ensure that African clubs and national teams can participate without logistical challenges or player availability issues.
We understand the disappointment this may cause to fans and stakeholders, but the integrity of the competition and the welfare of the players remain our top priorities, said CAF President Patrice Motsepe in an official statement.
By moving AFCON to January 2026, we aim to provide a more suitable calendar that accommodates all parties involved.
The postponement also allows clubs participating in the FIFA Club World Cup to compete without compromising their players’ commitments to their national teams during AFCON.
Morocco, the host nation, expressed full support for the decision, assuring that preparations for the tournament will continue unabated to deliver a successful event in early 2026.
Football fans across Africa are now adjusting their expectations as the continent’s premier football championship shifts to the new dates, promising an exciting kickoff to the year 2026.
The Africa Cup of Nations is the continent’s most prestigious football tournament, held every two years, featuring the best national teams competing for the continental crown.
