2027 Elections: PDP Governors Convene Emergency Meeting Amid Surge in Defections

In response to a growing wave of defections, governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly set to hold an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday to strategize on the party’s future.

It has been reported that the past fortnight has been particularly challenging for the PDP, as numerous members have decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection momentum escalated on April 23 when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the PDP’s state structure, pledged allegiance to the APC.

This shift occurred shortly after PDP governors met in Ibadan, Oyo State, where they expressed openness to coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, they distanced themselves from the coalition initiative led by former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Additionally, all three PDP Senators from Kebbi State are reportedly preparing to join the APC.

According to insider sources, unless plans change last minute, the emergency meeting will be held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting is also expected to touch on matters related to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for May 27.
