2027 Elections: Senator Moro Confirms Talks to Bring Obi, Jonathan Back to PDP

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has revealed that discussions are ongoing for former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Moro confirmed that the PDP is actively engaging both leaders as part of efforts to reclaim power. He said,
“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate.’”

When asked about the likelihood of former President Jonathan returning to the PDP, Moro stated, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Goodluck Jonathan, who assumed office in 2011 following the death of President Musa Yar’Adua and governed until 2015, became Nigeria’s first incumbent president to lose an election when he was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari. Since then, he has largely stayed away from active politics within the PDP, though party loyalists have continued to call for his return.

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before defecting to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 elections. His campaign drew substantial youth support and ultimately placed him third behind Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

As the 2027 elections approach, Obi has been collaborating with prominent opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and has indicated his interest in running for president again. However, the platform through which he will pursue this ambition remains uncertain.

With the PDP actively seeking to consolidate experienced leaders and popular figures, the party aims to strengthen its chances in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential race.
