2027: Peter Obi Pledges One-Term Presidency in Power-Sharing Proposal to Coalition
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially proposed serving only one term if elected president in 2027, a move aimed at strengthening a united opposition coalition against the ruling APC.
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, confirmed that Obi’s one-term presidency offer has been formally submitted for review by members of the new coalition.
The proposal stipulates that any southern candidate, including Obi himself, would serve only until May 28, 2031, in line with Nigeria’s zoning and power rotation understanding.
Tanko made this known during a public appearance in Gombe, where he also expressed confidence in Obi’s integrity and the strategic nature of the plan.
While the Nigerian Constitution permits two presidential terms, Obi believes a single four-year tenure would be enough to implement impactful reforms and reset the country’s direction.
Peter Obi recently joined forces with other political heavyweights including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai under a new coalition.
The group has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Obi’s proposal appears to be part of broader negotiations within the coalition to build trust and present a united front.
“Peter Obi has offered to serve just one term if elected. That proposal has now been submitted to the coalition. It shows his sincerity and commitment to a united Nigeria,” Tanko stated.
He added: “Obi believes four years is enough to stabilize power supply, revive the economy, and return Nigeria to a productive nation.”
