96-Year-Old Woman Denied Vote in Anambra Governorship Election Breaks Down in Tears
During the ongoing Anambra State governorship election, a 96-year-old woman, Elizabeth Onike, was prevented from casting her vote at the Umudim Akasi Polling Unit in Anaocha Local Government Area, sparking public sympathy.
According to reports, Onike was denied the opportunity to vote because she lacked a valid voter’s card. Speaking after the incident, she expressed her disappointment, saying, “My children are outside, and none is at home with me. I am pained that I am not going to vote in this election to determine who will be my next governor.”
The election, featuring 16 candidates, is taking place across all 21 local government areas in Anambra. Early results uploaded by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show Governor Charles Soludo of APGA leading in 17 local government areas, including Anambra East, Ayamelum, and Oyi, though a winner has yet to be officially declared.
The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by elderly voters and sparked calls for greater accessibility and voter support for seniors in future elections.
