Tinubu Reshuffles Cabinet: Five Ministers Dismissed, Ten Reassigned, and Seven New Appointments Made
In a significant move after growing public pressure, President Bola Tinubu has dismissed five ministers from his cabinet. In addition to the dismissals, he has reassigned ten ministers to different portfolios and nominated seven new ministers, pending Senate confirmation.
Since his inauguration in August 2023, Tinubu has faced increasing dissatisfaction regarding the performance of certain ministers amid economic challenges, rising prices, and security concerns. A reshuffle had long been anticipated, with the president’s spokesman previously indicating this would happen, although no specific timeline was provided.
During the recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the following ministers were relieved of their duties: Uju-Ken Ohanenye (Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Tahir Mamman (Education), Abdullahi Gwarzo (State for Housing and Urban Development), and Jamila Ibrahim (Youth Development).
New nominations include Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu for Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Nentawe Yilwatda as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, and Maigari Dingyadi as Minister for Labour and Employment, among others.
Tinubu has also announced the removal of the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, creating instead the Ministry of Regional Development to oversee various regional commissions.
The Ministry of Sports Development has been dissolved, with its responsibilities assigned to the National Sports Commission. Additionally, the Federal Ministries of Tourism and Arts and Culture have been merged into a new entity focusing on arts, culture, tourism, and the creative economy.
Former Minister Sunday Dare is set to take on a new role as Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the outgoing ministers for their contributions and emphasized the importance of the new appointees understanding their role in driving the nation’s growth forward.
