LP Lawmaker Benedict Etanabene Claims Fear of APC’s Strength Drives Party Defections.

In a recent statement, Benedict Etanabene, a member of the House of Representatives for Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency in Delta State, explained why several lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He suggested that the recent victories of APC candidates in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections have left some members of the LP apprehensive about their political futures.

Etanabene emphasized that these defections are not indicative of a crisis within the Labour Party, asserting that many who left still support the leadership of Julius Abure.

He anticipates that similar trends may emerge from other opposition parties, citing a broader concern that the APC could dominate the political landscape by 2027.

He voiced concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria, calling for improvements to ensure that votes truly count. Recently, four members of the LP Caucus announced their shift to the ruling party, with speaker Abbas Tajudeen noting their defection during a House session.

In response, the LP has vowed to declare their seats vacant in accordance with the law.
