Xabi Alonso Provides Positive Update on Victor Boniface’s Injury Recovery Ahead of DFB-Pokal Clash

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso provided an optimistic injury update on Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, who is recovering from a thigh injury sustained while on international duty with the Super Eagles.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of their upcoming DFB-Pokal clash against Bayern Munich, Alonso stated that Boniface is on the right track in his recovery process.

Boniface suffered the injury during a match against Rwanda on November 18, 2024, while representing Nigeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Since then, he has been sidelined from Leverkusen’s squad, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the year.

Despite these concerns, Alonso expressed hope for Boniface’s recovery, emphasizing that tests are conducted every few days to monitor his progress.

We have hope. Every two or three days, tests are carried out to see how he is doing. He is on the right track, but it is too early to say when he will be back, Alonso remarked. The coach refrained from providing a specific timeline for Boniface’s return but hinted at the possibility of him being fit before the winter break.

Boniface’s absence has been felt by Bayer Leverkusen, as he had been in good form prior to his injury, scoring eight goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions. In his absence, fellow striker Patrik Schick has also faced injury challenges, further complicating Alonso’s attacking options. However, Nathan Tella has stepped up in recent matches, showcasing his versatility and ability to fill the void left by Boniface.

As Bayer Leverkusen prepares for their crucial match against Bayern Munich, Alonso remains hopeful that Boniface will make a swift return to bolster their attacking lineup during this critical period of the season.
