Tragedy at Sea: Greek Coast Guard Reports Five Migrant Deaths Amid Rescue Operations

The Greek coast guard has reported a tragic incident involving at least five migrant deaths and several individuals missing during multiple rescue operations off the coast of Greece. The operations, which took place south of the island of Crete, have underscored the ongoing challenges related to migration in the Mediterranean.

The coast guard initiated four separate rescue missions that began late Friday and continued into Saturday. As of the latest reports, over 200 migrants were successfully rescued, while five bodies were recovered from the water. Survivors indicated that dozens more were aboard the same vessel that capsized.

The operations involved nine vessels, including coast guard ships, an Italian navy frigate, and commercial ships, along with aerial support from helicopters. The ongoing search efforts are focused on locating those still unaccounted for.

The first three operations occurred near Gavdos, an island south of Crete, where 39 individuals were rescued in one ongoing operation. In addition, 47 and 89 migrants were rescued in two separate incidents in the same area. A fourth operation took place off the southern Peloponnese region, where another 28 migrants were saved without any reported missing.

Witnesses have reported that many of the boats involved likely departed from Libya, a common launch point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

This incident highlights the continuing migration crisis in the Mediterranean, where perilous sea crossings have become increasingly common. According to reports from humanitarian organizations, thousands of migrants attempt to make this dangerous journey each year in search of safety and better opportunities in Europe.

Greek authorities have faced criticism regarding their handling of migration issues, with calls for improved safety measures and support for vulnerable populations making these treacherous crossings.

As rescue operations continue, the Greek coast guard remains committed to addressing these challenges while ensuring the safety of all individuals at sea.
