Tokyo to Host World Athletics Championships from September 13 to 21, 2025

The 2025 World Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to September 21.

This prestigious event will mark the twentieth edition of the championships and is expected to attract over 2,000 athletes from approximately 200 countries, competing in a total of 49 events at the iconic Japan National Stadium.

This will be the second time Tokyo has hosted the World Athletics Championships, with the first occurring in 1991.

The upcoming championships are particularly significant as they represent a return to large-scale sporting events following the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the previous Olympic Games held behind closed doors. Organizers are eager to welcome fans back into the stadium to experience world-class athletics live.

The championships will feature a variety of track and field events, including popular disciplines such as the 100 meters, long jump, and pole vault. The event’s motto, Wonders of Unity, reflects the spirit of international cooperation and competition that defines athletics.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed excitement about returning to Tokyo, stating, We are thrilled to be back in Tokyo with the biggest stars of our sport who will light up the iconic stadium across nine days of awe-inspiring competition.

The qualification system for athletes has been established, allowing competitors to earn their spots based on entry standards and world rankings. The qualifying window for various events began in November 2023 and will continue until August 2025.

In addition to the athletics event, the World Aquatics Championships are also scheduled for July 11 to August 3, 2025, in Singapore. This dual hosting of major international sporting events highlights a busy year for athletics and aquatics on the global stage.

As anticipation builds for these championships, fans and athletes alike look forward to an exciting showcase of talent and competition in Tokyo later this year.
