Global Coalition Demands Accountability for Myanmar Atrocities as Human Rights Violations Escalate

A coalition of 46 organizations has issued an urgent appeal to the international community to take decisive action against atrocities committed in Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021.

The groups emphasize the need for global pressure to hold perpetrators accountable for widespread human rights abuses and war crimes.

The military junta in Myanmar has been accused of systematic violations, including arbitrary arrests, torture, extrajudicial killings, and indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

These actions have displaced over 3.5 million people and left more than 15 million facing acute food insecurity. Reports also highlight the use of banned cluster munitions, indiscriminate aerial bombardments, and attacks on humanitarian workers, all of which violate international law.

Ethnic minorities, particularly the Rohingya, continue to face severe persecution. Over 600,000 Rohingya remain confined under apartheid-like conditions in Myanmar, with many denied basic rights and humanitarian aid. The junta’s failure to respond effectively to natural disasters, such as Cyclone Mocha in 2023, has exacerbated the suffering of vulnerable populations.

The coalition’s statement underscores the urgency of addressing these atrocities through international mechanisms. They call for accountability measures, increased humanitarian aid access, and a political solution that includes protections for ethnic minorities like the Rohingya.
