Opeyori Claims Seventh African Title, Dominates Badminton Championship

Nigerian badminton sensation Anuoluwapo Opeyori has made history by securing his seventh African title at the 2025 All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship.

Opeyori dominated the men’s singles final, defeating Egypt’s Adham Hatem Elgamal 2-0 in a thrilling match held at the Gymnase de Japoma in Douala, Cameroon.

The final saw Opeyori assert his dominance early, winning the first set convincingly with a score of 21-7. However, the second set was a closely contested affair, with Opeyori rallying to secure a narrow 23-21 victory over Elgamal. This win marked his fifth consecutive African title, solidifying his status as Africa’s top badminton player.

En route to the final, Opeyori demonstrated his skill by overcoming opponents from Zambia, Mauritius, and Morocco. His impressive performance throughout the tournament underscored his experience and technical prowess, making him a formidable force in African badminton.

Opeyori’s victory is a highlight of Nigeria’s campaign at the championships, which also saw the team secure three medals overall, including one gold and two bronze.

Despite a strong lineup, Nigeria’s team fell short in the team event, losing to Mauritius in the quarterfinals.
