Lagos Assembly Crisis: Obasa Returns to Complex Amid Tension.

The Lagos State House of Assembly crisis deepened as the ‘impeached’ Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, returned to the complex with armed security operatives and supporters, sparking tension and fear among legislative staff.

This is the second day in a row that Obasa has stormed the House, after being removed by 36 of his 40 colleagues on January 13, 2025.

The atmosphere was rowdy, with legislative staff vacating their offices in fear. The All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus committee, led by Chief Bisi Akande, and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) are working to resolve the leadership crisis.

However, GAC Chairman Pa Tajudeen Olusi stated that the lawmakers removed Obasa without consulting the party and the GAC.Obasa had gone to court to challenge his removal, and the Lagos High Court has fixed March 7 for the hearing of all pending applications in the lawsuit.

The new Speaker, Princess Mojisola Meranda, and 35 members loyal to her appeared in court to defend the suit filed against them by Obasa.

Meranda condemned Obasa’s invasion of her office, calling it “a total show of shame” and emphasizing that the rule of law must prevail.

The Assembly has also condemned the invasion, stating that it was an “unsanctioned attempt to convene a plenary session” that lacked the required formal notice, quorum, approved agenda, and mace.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Strategy, Mr. Stephen Ogundipe, accused Obasa of creating unnecessary drama and expressed confidence that the court would expose the truth.

The GAC and the APC are working to resolve the matter amicably, with a high-powered committee led by Chief Bisi Akande making efforts to find a solution.
