Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to UN Peacekeeping Amid Global Diplomatic Developments

Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the United Nations and the international community in promoting global peace and security, emphasizing its active role in international peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

This declaration was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, during the second day of the Plenary High-Level Pledging Session at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 held in Berlin.

Minister Badaru Abubakar highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, including the rotation of the Base Protection Force deployed to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei and the Formed Police Unit serving in the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia.

He also underscored Nigeria’s leadership in proactive peace efforts across the West African sub-region through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), citing interventions in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau.

In addition to renewing existing peacekeeping pledges, Nigeria announced five new commitments under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System, reinforcing its dedication to international peace operations and readiness to respond to emerging global security challenges.

Meanwhile, on the global stage, there are cautious signs of progress in resolving long-standing conflicts. Russia and Ukraine have shown tentative willingness to engage in direct peace talks, with NATO leaders and former U.S. President Donald Trump facilitating dialogue, although Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to fully accept ceasefire proposals.

In South Asia, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire following recent hostilities, with international actors urging both nations to continue dialogue to prevent further escalation.

These developments reflect a complex but hopeful international environment where diplomatic efforts and peacekeeping commitments remain central to global stability.
