“Revamped Leadership: SGF Akume Sets Up Committee to Fast-track Board Appointments”
In the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to dissolve agency boards in June 2023, an exclusive report from Newsflash.ng reveals that Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume has taken swift action by establishing an ad hoc committee to meticulously evaluate the qualifications of potential board appointees.
This dynamic ad hoc committee, spearheaded by former Kebbi State governor Atiku Bagudu and former Jigawa State governor Abubakar Badaru, is working in close collaboration to ensure a thorough assessment of resumes. Their aim is to facilitate a timely submission of names, aligning with the “renewed hope” agenda and paving the way for new board members to resume their roles without delay.
Sources from the SGF office confirm that a meeting transpired between George Akume, Atiku Bagudu, and Abubakar Badaru on Friday in Abuja. However, the exact timeline for the final list of appointees remains uncertain at this juncture.
A representative from within the SGF office revealed, “The SGF established an ad hoc committee, appointing Atiku Bagudu and Abubakar Badaru as co-chairs. With the cabinet now firmly in place, the focus has shifted to the constitution of agency boards.”
It’s important to note that the dissolution of Federal Government parastatal, agency, institution, and government-owned company boards was announced by President Tinubu via the SGF office. A spokesperson from the SGF office, Willie Bassey, stated, “While 14 agencies listed in the third schedule, Part 1, Section 153 (i) of the Constitution were exempted from this directive, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has exercised his constitutional powers to dissolve the governing boards of other entities in the interest of the public.”
Bassey continued, “In light of these changes and until new boards are constituted, the Chief Executive Officers of these organizations are directed to refer matters requiring board attention to the President through the Permanent Secretaries of their respective supervisory Ministries and Offices.”
