Bayelsa State House of Assembly Condemns Police Invasion of Opu-Nembe

In a significant move, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has taken a stand against the recent invasion of Opu-Nembe community in Nembe Local Government Area by the police. The invasion, which occurred last Saturday, has ignited concerns among legislators due to the destruction of property and alleged loss of lives.

During deliberations on a motion initiated by Oteigbanyo George-Braah, the representative of Nembe Constituency 1, Speaker Abraham Ingobere voiced his concerns. He urged the Inspector-General of Police to adhere to a court order by withdrawing the police force that had been deployed to Opu-Nembe.

The Assembly additionally called on key figures, such as the Inspector-General of Police, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, and other relevant security agencies, to conduct an extensive investigation into the incident and promptly apprehend those responsible.

As part of their resolution, the Assembly made a two-fold appeal: firstly, for the Bayelsa State Government to establish a judicial commission of inquiry without delay, and secondly, for both the Federal and State Governments to implement appropriate measures to prevent any future assaults on the community. This move signifies the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring justice and safety for the residents of Opu-Nembe.
