‘I was almost burnt alive with my gang’ – Daddy Showkey
Veteran Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has shared a story about a dangerous period in his life when he was caught up in gang activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
He recalled how he and a group of young men stumbled upon a gun at a dump site and began using it to instill fear in people. However, their actions eventually led to a violent confrontation that nearly resulted in Showkey being lynched to death.
During a teaser for the upcoming episode of the ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Daddy Showkey reminisced about a frightening incident from his past when he and his gang were on the verge of being set on fire while bound. In a moment of salvation, they were rescued.
The seasoned singer reflected on his challenging childhood, noting that despite those hardships, he managed to achieve legendary status.
He said:
“I was in a gang back in the day. I won’t lie. Some of us found a gun where we used to pick valuables from refuse dump in Ikorodu. We started using the gun to terrorise the area.
“One day, when we were out in our usual style, someone saw us and started screaming, ‘thieves, thieves, thieves.’ Then we started running, but we were apprehended. They tied us up. They were about to burn us but we were saved miraculously.
“I am a living testimony for every young person, because if I can be alive today and still become Daddy Showkey, then there’s hope for everyone.”
