The elderly group strongly criticizes Labour Party backers for derogatory remarks towards Oba of Benin.

A collective of esteemed elders from Edo State has vehemently decried what they perceive as a relentless onslaught of insults and abuse directed towards the revered Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, by supporters aligned with the Labour Party and their gubernatorial aspirant, Olumide Akpata.

Operating under the banner of the Edo Socio-Cultural Advancement and Good Governance Initiative, these elders have expressed deep dismay and astonishment at what they view as the immature, baseless, and intolerable conduct exhibited by certain Labour Party loyalists on various social media platforms.

A circulating video clip captures the Oba promptly discrediting Akpata’s claims, revealing that he had tasked one of his chiefs to investigate the candidate’s assertions, only to ascertain that there were no familial ties, either direct or indirect, between Akpata and the Palace.

Despite the Oba’s clarification, some supporters of the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate resorted to verbal attacks against the Oba across different social media channels.

However, in a press release issued on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Elders’ group, Comrade Melvin Irabor, asserted that the Oba was justified in rectifying Akpata’s assertion of being the “son of the palace.”
