Abia State University Lecturers Demand Payment After 12 Months of Salary Arrears, Seek Governor Alex Otti’s Intervention
Lecturers hired by Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, have raised urgent concerns over unpaid salaries for more than a year, urging Governor Alex Otti to intervene.
Despite active service since their 2023 employment, their pay ceased in June 2024 following a government directive that shifted payroll control from the university to the state.
The lecturers describe the situation as abandonment and call for resolution after months of broken promises and financial hardship.
Spokespersons including Chukwemeka Thompson and other lecturers have appealed to the governor, highlighting their continued contribution to academic work despite the lack of remuneration.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ABSU Chapter corroborated their claims, emphasizing the need for salary regularization.
As of now, neither ABSU management nor the Abia State Government has publicly addressed these salary arrears or the lecturers’ grievances.
