Abuja Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands.
Resident doctors in Abuja have declared an indefinite strike after the expiration of their earlier seven-day warning strike.
The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT) made the announcement on Monday in a communique signed by its President, Dr. George Ebong, and General Secretary, Dr. Agbor Affiong, following failed negotiations with the FCTA.
The doctors said they were forced to down tools after months of unfulfilled promises, citing unresolved issues such as poor working conditions, unpaid allowances, lack of medical consumables, and the urgent need for more personnel in FCT hospitals. Despite repeated talks with the administration, they lamented that their concerns had only been met with delays and excuses.
According to the communique, the welfare of doctors and the overall quality of healthcare delivery in the territory have been neglected for too long, leaving them with no choice but to embark on the strike.
The industrial action is expected to heavily disrupt services in public hospitals across Abuja, where resident doctors make up a large part of the workforce.
The association appealed to residents for patience and understanding, stressing that the strike was not just for their welfare but also for better healthcare delivery in the long run. They also called on the FCTA to urgently address their demands and bring the crisis to a quick end.
