Activist Sowore Declared Wanted as Police Investigate Alleged Protest Plans
The Lagos State Police Command has declared activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore wanted following allegations that he attempted to incite public disorder after the recent demolition of homes in Oworonshoki.
Police Commissioner Olorundare Jimoh said Sowore allegedly ignored repeated warnings not to organize protests against the government’s demolition exercise, which authorities describe as part of an urban renewal project.
Despite warnings, members of Sowore’s Take It Back Movement reportedly staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday, which security operatives dispersed using tear gas. Sowore himself, however, was absent from the protest.
Commissioner Jimoh further alleged that Sowore arrived in Lagos from Abuja but deliberately avoided appearing at the protest site. He added:
“He has reportedly made plans to block the Third Mainland Bridge, which is a serious offense. We are actively pursuing him and will apprehend him wherever he is.”
A heavy security presence was observed across key locations in Lagos, including the Third Mainland Bridge, as authorities sought to prevent potential unrest.
The Lagos State Government maintains that the demolition was aimed at urban development, but police insist that Sowore’s alleged actions were intended to disrupt public order.
