ADC Denies Coup Allegation, Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Process

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rejected allegations that it is plotting to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system or orchestrate a coup against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In an official statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the claim made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Onanuga had alleged via a tweet that some opposition elements were scheming to topple the government before the 2027 elections.

Abdullahi called the accusation “baseless and dangerous,” insisting the ADC remains fully committed to democratic principles.

“We are not soldiers; we are politicians. We do not carry bullets—we carry ballots,” Abdullahi said.

He emphasized that the party’s strategy is to contest and win elections through democratic means by offering Nigerians a credible alternative and vision for the country’s future.

He also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying it is ironic that a party which rose to power as the opposition now appears to be uncomfortable with democratic opposition.

“It is regrettable that the APC now finds it strange to have an opposition, even though it once occupied that same position,” he stated.

The ADC spokesperson urged President Tinubu to call his aides to order, warning that reckless accusations could stoke unnecessary political tension ahead of the next general election.

Abdullahi called on Nigerians to resist any attempts to stifle dissent or delegitimize opposition parties, stressing that a vibrant political landscape is essential to the health of any democracy.

“Nigeria’s democracy thrives when opposition parties are free to operate, present alternative ideas, and engage the electorate without fear or intimidation,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the ADC remains committed to building a better Nigeria through peace, accountability, and democratic participation.
