Anti-Corruption Group Petitions EFCC to Investigate Bauchi Governor’s Family Over Alleged ₦30 Billion Fraud, Secret Bank Accounts
A major corruption scandal is brewing in Bauchi State as the Citizens’ Coalition Against Corruption (CCAC), a civil society group, has filed a formal petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for an immediate investigation into Governor Bala Mohammed’s family over alleged contract fraud and money laundering totalling ₦30 billion.
In the petition dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, CCAC alleged that Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, son of the Governor, is at the center of a complex web of illicit financial activities involving as many as 50 secret bank accounts.
The group claims these accounts were used to launder public funds allegedly diverted from Bauchi State coffers.
The group accused Governor Mohammed, his wife, and other family members of colluding in these transactions, using proxies and fronts to mask the true nature of the financial dealings.
One of the focal points of the petition is a controversial ₦30 billion road construction contract awarded in April 2024 to TYC Construction Company.
Though publicly presented as a Chinese firm, CCAC asserts that the company is actually owned and operated by Ahmad Bala Mohammed Governor Mohammed’s son—and his son-in-law, Lawan Mohammed Adamu.
“Half of the contract sum was reportedly paid upfront,” the petition reads. “This appears to be a coordinated act of self-dealing using a family-controlled company to misappropriate state resources.”
CCAC also raised concerns about alleged harassment of whistleblowers and anti-corruption advocates in the state. The group cited the case of Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, a vocal critic of the administration, who it claims has faced intimidation for exposing corrupt practices.
The group is urging the EFCC to launch a thorough probe into the financial operations of the Governor’s son and his associates, conduct a forensic audit of funds disbursed to TYC Construction, and investigate the role of Governor Mohammed in the alleged diversion of public funds.
CCAC further demanded immediate protection for whistleblowers like Dr. Ahmad and emphasized that failure to act decisively will undermine Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.
“The EFCC must demonstrate that no one is above the law,” the petition concluded. “Nigerians deserve accountability not impunity.
