APC Petitions Police Over Killing of Inspector Akor, Alleges Activist Christopher Okhani as Suspect
The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of activist Christopher Okhai Okhani over the alleged murder of a police officer, Inspector Akor, in 2024.
According to the petition dated August 4, 2025, and signed by the party’s Legal Adviser, Stephen I. Okoror Esq., the late Inspector Akor was attached to the Edo State Governor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo. The officer was reportedly shot and killed during the governor’s arrival at the Benin Airport in the build-up to the previous year’s gubernatorial election.
The petition alleges that Okhani and his associates opened fire in what was described as an attempted assassination of the governor. The bullet, however, struck Inspector Akor, who died instantly at the scene. While some of the suspects were reportedly arrested after the incident, Okhani allegedly fled and has remained at large.
The APC claims that Okhani, referred to in the petition as the “ringleader” of the group, has resurfaced in Edo North and is allegedly leading another armed faction suspected of planning further violence in the state.
In the petition, the APC describes Okhani as a notorious criminal who disappears after committing violent crimes, only to reemerge and continue similar activities. The party expressed concern over his renewed presence in Edo North and urged the police to act swiftly to prevent potential unrest.
Okoror wrote, “I, the undersigned, wish to bring to your notice the brutal murder of your police officer attached to the current Governor of Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo, just before the gubernatorial election last year. The officer, Inspector Akor, was gunned down by Mr. Christopher Okhai Okhani and his cohorts during the governor’s arrival from Abuja at the airport.”
He continued, “After the attack, some members of the group were arrested, but Mr. Okhani fled to an unknown destination. Despite efforts, he has not been apprehended. Reports now indicate that he has returned and is leading another group of hoodlums, potentially plotting further violence.”
The letter concludes with a plea to the police authorities to use all available means to arrest Okhani and ensure that he and his alleged accomplices are prosecuted.
“I, on behalf of the party, wish to appreciate you for your continued cooperation,” the petition ends.
