ASUU ESUT Branch Celebrates her Association Day, Awards members and deceased family

ENUGU – The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) celebrated ASUU Day 2025 on Thursday, 27 November at the Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium.

This year’s theme was “Empowering Academics – Enhancing Wellness”.

The event started later than the planned 10 a.m. time. It began with the roll call of members, followed by speeches, panel discussions on health, and free medical checks for everyone present. Doctors, including heart specialists and eye doctors, spoke about common health problems such as high blood pressure, prostate issues, and safe levels of alcohol use.

The chief guest and keynote speaker Comrade Christopher Piwuna, National President of ASUU who was represented by Comrade Charles Obianuju. Special guests included Comrade Ofukwu Raphael Agbo (ASUU National Resource Person), Comrade A.Z. Loko (Chairperson, ASUU Nasarawa State University), and the host, Dr Andrew Apeh, Acting Chairperson of ASUU ESUT branch.

During his speech, Comrade Ofukwu Raphael Agbo expressed worry about the low turnout. He said, “The university needs to wake up.” He also defended ASUU’s tough stance, saying, “Where there is no trouble, there is no success,” and stressed the union’s important role in protecting university staff and standards.

Newly promoted professors were celebrated. Past leaders of the ESUT branch were honoured. A cheque of ₦400,000 was given to the branch chairman who has been ill for some time. Twenty-seven retiring members were also recognised. Some of them are Professor Ike Ndolo (Mass Communication), Highcent Elogikwe (TVE), Dr Daniel Ugwuja, Barr. Sam Nnamani (Law), Professor Greg Onosike, Richard Onuigbo, Arch. John Ezigbo, Dr Onowu, and others.

The Academic staff union of universities (ASUU) Acting Chairman Comr. Dr Andrew Apeh announced that 19 professors were promoted this year.

He also stated that As a union, our welfare is our fundamental human right and is time we address it.
Let us always fight for our right and Our activism of unionism must be real energise for good, we must be the change in the system.

Let us unite for a better welfare and good condition and better future of our self and family,our welfare is not a privilege it is a right.

We deserve a salary review in line with national benchmark .
ASUU day is a day to look into that and talk about our welfare.
Is high time we put our hands together to achieve good.

I want to to commend and appreciates All members of ASUU Esut branch for they unwavering support and show of love within this few months of my acting Capacity for trust and confidence and I assure you I will continue to do my best.

2023 and those promoted in 2024, I can not mention all your names,we celebrate you for achieving this academic feet ,we pray for more ahead.

ASUU Enugu State University of science and Technology with mix feelings and over joy to celebrate this outstanding number of professors for repute and we say congratulations .

To be come a professor in university like this ,is not an easy one.
