Atiku Backs Fubara Ahead of Rivers Local Government Elections
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly endorsed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of today’s local government elections. Atiku described the elections as a beacon of hope for constitutional democracy, and commended Fubara’s courageous leadership in ensuring the elections take place.
Atiku emphasized that the elections present an opportunity to uphold the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, and encouraged residents to participate peacefully. His statement comes amidst an ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, with some groups opposing the elections.
Meanwhile, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has accused the Nigeria Police of unprofessional handling of issues related to the elections, and urged President Bola Tinubu to call the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Minister Nyesom Wike to order.
The elections have been marred by controversy, with an explosion rocking the Rivers State secretariat of the All Progressives Congress in Port Harcourt, and the IGP cautioning Fubara against threatening to shed blood or burn down the state.
