Atiku, Obi, and Other Politicians Consider Joining SDP, Claims Former Presidential Candidate.
A group of prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, are reportedly in discussions to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
This information comes from Adewole Adebayo, the SDP presidential candidate from the 2023 elections. Adebayo stated that representatives for both Atiku and Obi are engaged in talks about their potential affiliation with the SDP, which has recently seen a notable addition in a former governor of Kaduna State from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“People are joining my party, and we are actively welcoming them. I am committed to making this integration smooth. However, we’re addressing some challenges, especially concerning behaviour that doesn’t align with our party culture,” Adebayo remarked during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
He added, “While we have received reports that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, is in discussions about joining us, nothing is confirmed until he officially becomes a member.
If they comply with our party’s culture and follow our established procedures, we have the potential to create a strong alternative for Nigerians that could unseat the APC and send President Tinubu back to his home in Lagos or wherever he prefers in Nigeria.”
Obi garnered significant support during the last presidential election, finishing in third place with around six million votes, while Atiku came in second in a contest won by Bola Tinubu of the APC.
Despite various speculations regarding his party affiliation, Obi has consistently maintained his commitment to the Labour Party, the platform through which he contested the presidential election in 2023.
