Auchi Diocese Mourns Seminarian Killed After Abduction in Edo State

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has confirmed the death of a minor seminarian, Emmanuel Alabi, who was abducted alongside two others in July 2025 in Edo State.

In a statement released by the Assistant Director of Communications of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, it was revealed that Alabi died while in captivity.

The church expressed gratitude to God for the safe release of the other two abducted seminarians, Japhet Jesse and Joshua Aleobua.

The tragic incident occurred on July 10, 2025, when armed men attacked the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, killing a civil defence officer and abducting the three seminarians. Despite appeals from their families and the church for their release, only two regained freedom.

“We are grateful to God for the safe release of Japhet Jesse much earlier and, most recently, Joshua Aleobua, who regained his freedom on November 4, 2025. However, with deep sorrow, we announce the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life in the course of the ordeal,” the statement read.

The Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel G. Dunia, expressed his grief over Alabi’s death and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. He also warned political leaders not to ignore the worsening insecurity, urging them to prioritise safety and the well-being of citizens ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Diocese called on Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the repose of Alabi’s soul and for peace and healing across Nigeria.
