“Awujale Told Me I’d Rule for 8 Years” – President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Monarch at Fidau Prayers
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing the revered monarch as a guiding light and a pivotal figure in his political journey.
Speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late monarch at Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu recalled a moment of deep personal significance when the Awujale confidently assured him of electoral success.
“I came to him, and he blessed me. He said, ‘You will win that election, and you will be re-elected. Go ahead,’” Tinubu recounted, adding that the late king’s words gave him strength and conviction during the toughest parts of his journey.
The President hailed Oba Adetona as a paragon of truth, courage, and honour.
“He was bold, wise, and never deceptive. He upheld moral integrity and stood firmly for justice,” Tinubu said.
He also praised the monarch’s historical stance during Nigeria’s democracy struggles, especially his steadfast support during the crisis following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
“During our protests against the annulled June 12 election, Baba remained resolute, offering encouragement and standing on the side of the people,” Tinubu added.
Earlier in the day, the President privately visited the family of the late monarch, laying a wreath at his gravesite before heading to the stadium for the public prayers.
Calling on Ijebuland’s people and Nigeria’s political class, Tinubu urged the preservation of the monarch’s legacy of unity, culture, and dignity.
“Kabiyesi was more than a traditional ruler; he was a custodian of Yoruba heritage and a symbol of hope. Let us allow the unity he stood for to guide us forward,” he said.
