Azeezat Shorunmu Opens Up on Tragic Loss of Her Voice During Movie Shoot
Veteran Nollywood actress and producer Azeezat Shorunmu has emotionally recounted the tragic event that led to the permanent loss of her original voice while filming on a movie set
In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Azeezat revealed that the incident occurred during the production of the film Apase, when she received heartbreaking news that fellow actress Mummy Surutu had just lost her child.
Overwhelmed with shock and sorrow, Azeezat let out a loud scream unaware that the emotional outburst would leave her with lasting damage.
“We were about to start filming when I heard the news,” she said. “I screamed so loud, and from that moment, my voice started to change.”
The intense scream reportedly caused severe strain on her vocal cords. What initially seemed like a temporary loss of voice turned into months of silence. After four months, she began to speak again but her voice had changed permanently to the now-distinctive raspy tone familiar to fans today.
Despite undergoing medical treatments and even spiritual interventions, Azeezat’s original voice never returned.
“Everyone knows this is not my real voice,” she shared. “I used everything even anointing oil but when my speech came back, it wasn’t the same. It was tiny and cracked.”
Azeezat described the experience as deeply painful, noting how difficult it was to express herself during the months she was unable to speak.
“It hurts when you want to talk and nothing comes out. I now understand what it means to be voiceless,” she said.
Though the incident changed her life and career, the actress has since come to embrace her new voice, turning what was once a painful loss into a mark of resilience and identity.
