Babachir Lawal Backs Kwankwaso, Says Tinubu Government Has No Visible Projects in Northern Nigeria

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has dismissed claims by the Tinubu-led administration that significant infrastructure is being developed in northern Nigeria, stating that no such projects are visible on the ground.

In a bold critique of the current administration, Lawal declared there are no visible signs of federal infrastructure projects in the northern region, countering recent statements by government officials about ongoing developments.

Lawal expressed his views during an interview on Trust TV, where he endorsed comments made by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of marginalising the North in federal infrastructure allocation.

“No projects are going on at least they are not visible to the eye. Maybe in their imagination or in the spirit but we don’t see it,” Lawal said. “We don’t see any construction work, we don’t see any infrastructure going on. No federal government project whatsoever.”

He further emphasized that Kwankwaso’s opinion carries weight due to his background in engineering, likening his own technical perspective to that of Kwankwaso and Minister David Umahi. “Kwankwaso is also an engineer, so he understands these things. Every honest Nigerian knows the North is being marginalised,” he added.

Lawal also accused the Tinubu administration of not only neglecting northern development but reversing the progress made in previous years. He warned that such continued marginalisation could severely impact the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s support base in the North ahead of the next general elections.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, a prominent northern political figure, recently voiced strong concerns about what he described as a growing regional imbalance in federal projects. His criticisms have been echoed by other northern stakeholders, further intensifying debate over equity in national development.

The federal government has pushed back against these accusations, insisting that several infrastructure projects are currently underway in the North. Officials also accused Kwankwaso of deliberately misleading the public for political gain.

“Every sensible, honest Nigerian will know that the North is being marginalised,” – Babachir Lawal.
