Babachir Lawal Dumps APC, Joins Coalition to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect, signalling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election.
Lawal, who served under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari during his first term, made the announcement in a letter dated June 29, 2025, and addressed to the APC Chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
In the letter, he confirmed his departure from the party and hinted at plans to work with like-minded Nigerians to build a better nation. His resignation comes as he aligns with a growing coalition of political heavyweights seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.
The coalition, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, includes prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
Lawal’s move is part of a broader strategy by opposition leaders to consolidate forces under a viable party ahead of the 2027 polls. Speaking to Vanguard in June, Lawal confirmed the coalition had considered forming a new party but opted to join an existing one for strategic reasons.
He dismissed reports linking him to another splinter group, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), led by Dr. Usman Ardo, saying the ADC remains their only realistic option.
He clarified that while members like Atiku and Peter Obi are involved, they do so independently of their current party affiliations, stressing that the coalition operates autonomously.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress,” Lawal stated in his letter.
“In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect.”
