“Benue Feels Like 1940s”: VDM’s Viral Remarks Spark Nationwide Debate on Infrastructure, Insecurity

Controversial social media activist, VeryDarkMan (VDM), has ignited a firestorm of reactions online following his recent remarks describing Benue State as the “most backward” in Nigeria.

In a viral video posted after a visit to the state, VDM slammed the level of infrastructure and insecurity, saying Benue appears to be “stuck in the 1940s.”

The activist’s comments have since triggered a fierce online debate, drawing both criticism and support from Nigerians across social media platforms.

VDM, known for his outspoken activism, recounted his recent journey to Yelwata, a community in Benue State, where he had planned to drill a borehole for residents. According to him, the project was halted due to widespread fear of violence and insecurity in the area.

“Benue is still in the year 1940. It is the most underdeveloped state I have ever seen in my life,” he said.
“Investors can’t come because of bad roads and insecurity. I’m currently drilling a borehole in Yelwata, but the people can’t continue the work because they are afraid of being killed.”

VDM visited the state in the aftermath of violent killings reported in the Yelwata area.

Nigerians on social media responded swiftly to VDM’s comments, with many Benue indigenes and supporters calling his remarks disrespectful and offensive. Others, however, said the influencer was only speaking the truth about a state that has long suffered from neglect and poor governance.

Here are a few online reactions:

@BenueBoy_TeeJay: “This is totally disrespectful! You don’t come to someone’s home and talk down on them like this.”

@NaijaActivist001: “VDM said nothing but the truth. Benue has been abandoned for too long. Someone had to say it.”

@Iam_EfeBabe: “So because you’re drilling one borehole, you now have the audacity to insult a whole state? Clout chaser.”

@Queen_Maka: “This guy’s delivery is always harsh, but the message is valid. Benue deserves better infrastructure.”

@Crypto_Odogwu: “Respect to VDM. He risked his life to help people and still exposed the truth. Leaders, do better!”

While some users urged VDM to channel his criticism directly at the government, others insisted his bluntness was necessary to spark change.
