Boy Arrested at 12 for Theft Freed After 10 Years in Prison Without Trial

Emeka Nzeruike, a boy arrested in 2015 at the age of 12 for alleged theft, has finally regained his freedom after spending 10 years in prison without a single day in court or access to legal representation.

The shocking case was brought to light by lawyer @_youfoundalex, who shared Emeka’s story on X (formerly Twitter). According to the lawyer, Emeka was unjustly imprisoned for a decade alone, forgotten, and without trial.

“Today at the prisons, I met a boy who has been in prison for 10 years. He was sent to prison when he was 12 in 2015. He is 22 now, still in prison awaiting trial for stealing. If I was told this story, I would hardly believe it,” the lawyer wrote.

With the support of his legal team, @_youfoundalex worked to secure Emeka’s release, finally restoring his freedom after a decade of silence and injustice.

“At the young age of 12, Emeka Nzeruike was thrown into prison in 2015 alone, afraid, and forgotten. No trial, no lawyer, no voice. Today, we stood where justice had long been silent. We held his hands, walked him out of the courtroom, and gave him back his future. Welcome back, Emeka,” the lawyer added.

The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage and sympathy from Nigerians on social media, many of whom were horrified by the systemic failure that allowed a child to languish behind bars without due process.

@Ms_Fej: “How do you lock a 12-year-old in jail with no emotion? What kind of country is Nigeria, fgs.”

@sheddido: “Who is the judge for this boy’s case? He needs to be sacked. This case lacks justice.”

@Kasieobi_1: “Nigeria is such a terrible place to live in or come from.”

@theeayomikun: “Bruhh see ringworm the size of a map all over his body.”

@steveabbey_: “12 years old? Who were the presiding officers in this case? Call them out.”

@OloriOfOloris: “What future is there again? They’ve stolen his life and dignity. Where does such a person even start from?”

Emeka’s story has reignited conversations about prison reform, child justice, and the urgent need for accountability within Nigeria’s judicial and correctional systems.
