BREAKING: Man Arrested in Delta State for Faking His Own Kidnap to Extort Family
A Nigerian man has been arrested after allegedly orchestrating his own kidnap to extort money from his family in order to fund a personal trip.
Reports indicate that he hired an accomplice to carry out the scheme, instructing him to pose as a Hausa speaker with a fake accent during the staged abduction. A video shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed the supposed victim tied up, while a voice in a forced Hausa accent spoke in the background.
The case was reported in Delta State, prompting activist Harrison Gwamnishu to launch an investigation with security operatives. Their findings revealed that the man had planned the fake abduction himself, intending to collect ransom from his family.
Upon exposure, the man admitted his involvement, saying:
“I’m sorry, I never meant to. I didn’t know it would lead to this extent. I thought it was just something they’d stage for me, I would travel, then come back and apologize to them.”
The accomplice who faked the accent was also presented to authorities and made to repeat his scripted statements from the staged kidnap.
The revelation has gone viral online, with many Nigerians expressing shock and criticism:
- @lifeinsolace: “It’s not funny. They should be arrested and punished. When things like this happen, we begin to doubt the veracity of real victims.”
- @etodiike: “Harrison needs a real government appointment specifically on security issues across states.”
- @RealManef: “Funny enough, then they go cash out and start to squander the money on women.”
The incident highlights growing concerns about staged crimes and the importance of vigilance, as authorities continue to monitor similar fraudulent activities.
