Bright Chimezie Challenges Modern Artistes on Lyrical Content.
Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie, famously known as Okoro Junior, has raised concerns about the quality of lyrics in contemporary Nigerian music.
During a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, Chimezie acknowledged the global success of modern artistes but questioned the depth and meaning of their musical messages.
“Music is more profitable now than in my time. The only problem I have with the present crop of artists is their lyrical content. In terms of rhythms and everything else, they are doing well. But what message are they passing to society?” he asked.
Reflecting on his own work, Chimezie highlighted the enduring relevance of songs from his era. “I remember I did ‘Respect Africa’ in 1984, about 40 years ago. But I can still watch what I did back then and be proud of my lyrics,” he said.
The highlife legend urged current artistes to consider the long-term impact of their music. “These days, I ask these boys, ‘The things that are coming out from your mouth, by the time your music lasts up to 40 years, can you sit back with your children and be proud of yourself?'”
While praising younger musicians for their creativity and success, Chimezie emphasized that lyrical depth, not just rhythm or commercial appeal, is what ensures longevity in the music industry.
