Buhari’s Body Arrives in Katsina for State Burial Amid Heavy Security, Dignitary Presence

The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived in Katsina State for final interment, following his death on Sunday, July 13, at a London hospital after a prolonged illness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also landed in Katsina shortly before the body’s arrival, leading a high-powered federal delegation attending the state burial.

The late president’s remains were flown in aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials.

A delegation from the Republic of Niger also arrived Tuesday morning to join the funeral rites, highlighting Buhari’s regional influence. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his presence in Daura for the burial via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Preparations for the burial had reached an advanced stage by Monday evening, with the grave already dug in Daura, Buhari’s hometown. The funeral prayer and interment were scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, following a delay in transporting the body from London.

Security has been tightened across Katsina, particularly in Daura. Armoured vehicles, DSS operatives, soldiers, and anti-riot police have been deployed at strategic locations, including around hotels housing dignitaries and roads leading to the burial site.

First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio were among other top figures who arrived ahead of the ceremony. Meanwhile, the federal government declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in Buhari’s honor to allow citizens, particularly in the North-West, to participate in the state burial.

Buhari previously served as military head of state (1984–1985) and was later elected democratic president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. While he was praised for his frugality and anti-corruption stance, his administration also faced criticism over economic hardship, insecurity, and allegations of human rights violations.
