CAF Awards 2023: Osimhen and Oshoala Wins Men and Women’s Player of the Year for Nigeria.
Nigerian sticker, Victoria Osimhen had been named African Footballer of the Year after beating Mohamed Salah to the award at a ceremony in Marrakech on Monday, and awarded the Player of the Year in men’s category with compatriot Asisat Oshoala winning the top prize in women’s category at the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Osimhen scored 26 goals as he helped Napoli to a surprise triumph in Serie A last season and was the leading marksman in Italy top division.
Osimhen claimed the prize to become the first Nigerian winner since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999 right after the Egypt’s Liverpool forward, Saleh, and Morocco’s Paris, St. Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi were nominated.
“It is a dream come true; said Osimhen; I have to thank everybody who helped me on this journey and all African’s who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults.”
At the recent Ballin D’Or Ceremony, Osimhen was recognized as one of the top ten with an eighth-placed finish, ever in the history of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s Barcelona forward, Oshoala, is now the winner of the women’s African Football of the Year for a record sixth time; having battled injury to help her side to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they took England to Penalties.
