China Reports Over 7,000 Cases of Chikungunya Virus

China has confirmed over 7,000 cases of the Chikungunya virus following an outbreak that began in July 2025, with the majority of cases recorded in Guangdong province.

Foshan city remains the most severely affected area. Patients are being hospitalized and kept under mosquito nets to minimize further transmission. Discharge from hospitals is only permitted once a patient tests negative for the virus.

Health authorities have introduced several measures to contain the spread. In Guangdong, residents have been advised to eliminate stagnant water in and around their homes to reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, travelers from Foshan are now subject to a 14-day quarantine.

Globally, the outbreak has escalated, with more than 240,000 reported cases and at least 90 deaths across 16 countries.
