Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Assault Charges in UK Nightclub Brawl Case
American R&B superstar Chris Brown has officially pleaded not guilty to serious assault charges during a court appearance at Southwark Crown Court in London on Friday, June 20, 2025. The charges stem from an alleged violent altercation at a London nightclub in early 2023.
Wearing a dark suit, tie, and glasses, the Grammy-winning singer stood in the dock and responded firmly with “Not guilty, ma’am” when the judge read out the charge: attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
The accusation relates to an incident that occurred on February 19, 2023, at a nightclub in Hanover Square, central London, where Brown was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation while on tour in the UK. According to prosecutors, the victim was allegedly struck multiple times with a glass bottle, then chased, punched, and kicked.
The severity of the case led to Brown’s arrest in May, 2025 at a luxury hotel in Manchester, where he had arrived via private jet. He was later released on bail after agreeing to post a £5 million (approximately $6.7 million) bond — a move that allowed him to continue with the UK leg of his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour.
Also arraigned was Omolulu Akinlolu, a 38-year-old co-defendant in the case, who likewise pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm. Both men are currently free on bail and are expected back in court on July 11, where they may be asked to respond to lesser charges of assault causing actual bodily harm.
In addition to the grievous bodily harm charge, Chris Brown is also facing a separate count of possessing an offensive weapon, specifically the bottle allegedly used in the attack. However, he was not asked to enter a plea for that charge during Friday’s proceedings.
The trial date has been set for October 26, 2026, giving both the prosecution and defense ample time to prepare. The case is drawing international attention, not just for the seriousness of the charges, but also due to Brown’s controversial legal history and global fame.
Brown, known for chart-topping hits like “Run It,” “Loyal,” and “Under the Influence,” has previously faced legal troubles in the US, most notably the 2009 domestic violence case involving singer Rihanna. This UK case could mark a significant turning point in the artist’s career if it proceeds to a full trial and results in conviction.
