CHSR and Shehu Sani Slam Sowore’s Arrest, Accuse Police of Silencing Dissent
The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) and former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani have condemned the detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, accusing the Nigeria Police Force of abusing power to silence dissent.
CHSR, in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, called the arrest a politically motivated witch-hunt, arguing that it targeted one of Nigeria’s most vocal critics of police brutality.
The organization described the incident as a blatant misuse of authority and an example of institutional double standards, especially since the case reportedly involves a police officer and allegations of defamation and forgery.
It insisted that the police cannot be both accuser and enforcer in a case involving one of their own, citing this as a serious breach of due process.
CHSR emphasized that Sowore’s arrest fits a long-standing pattern of harassment against activists, especially those who challenge state institutions. The group noted that Sowore voluntarily honored a police invitation and was detained unjustly, calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
CHSR further warned that silencing dissent undermines public trust and that history will remember the role institutions played during such critical times.
Former Senator Shehu Sani also reacted, calling the frequent arrests of Sowore a gross violation of democratic principles and freedom of speech. He urged authorities to counter criticisms with facts rather than force and reminded the public that Sowore has consistently remained non-partisan in his activism.
