Chukwuebuka Enekwechi Becomes First African to Break 22-Meter Barrier in Shot Put
Nigerian shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has made history, becoming the first African athlete to surpass the 22-meter mark in the men’s shot put event.
The record-breaking feat occurred over the weekend at the prestigious Eugene Diamond League meet in the United States. Enekwechi delivered a stunning throw of 22.10 meters, shattering his previous personal best of 21.91 meters a mark he had also set at the same event in 2024.
Despite the historic performance, Enekwechi finished third overall in a fiercely contested event. Joe Kovacs claimed first place with a world-leading throw of 22.48 meters, while Roger Steen edged into second with a 22.11-meter attempt on his fifth throw.
Enekwechi attempted to reclaim the second spot with a final throw of 21.68 meters but settled for bronze. Nevertheless, the throw secured his place in the record books and marked a significant milestone for African athletics.
His achievement has been widely celebrated across the sports world as a defining moment for Nigerian and African track and field athletes.
