Civic Group Blasts FCT Minister Wike Over Collapsing Abuja School, Says 223 Pupils Have Dropped Out
A civic accountability organization, MonITng, has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating state of the LEA Primary School in Gyadna, located in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), describing it as a humanitarian and educational emergency.
In a statement shared on social media and directly addressed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory in the National Assembly, the group painted a grim picture of the school’s current condition.
“We visited LEA Primary School, Gyadna, and what we saw was deeply disturbing,” MonITng stated.
The organization reported collapsed roofs, broken floors, and crumbling walls, noting that some classrooms have been abandoned entirely due to structural hazards. Pupils are reportedly forced to learn in dark, poorly ventilated rooms with leaking roofs and exposed ceilings.
“It’s heartbreaking to see children expected to learn in such inhumane conditions,” the group added.
MonITng revealed that 223 pupils have dropped out due to fears over their safety and the complete lack of response from relevant authorities, despite numerous appeals by the community.
“Parents are losing hope, and children are paying the price,” the group lamented.
“Teachers who remain are overwhelmed, delivering lessons in classrooms that resemble disaster zones.”
Describing the situation as a full-scale emergency, MonITng called on Minister Wike and Senator Kingibe to urgently prioritize the renovation of the school and the construction of new classrooms.
“No child should be forced to sit on broken benches, study under collapsing roofs, or drop out because the government failed to act. Education is a right, not a privilege for urban children alone,” the statement read.
The organization also questioned the credibility of the Minister’s claim that over 60 schools had been renovated under his watch, demanding transparency and equity in the allocation of resources.
