Civil Society Groups Demand Accountability as Nigerian Government Spends ₦16 Billion on Estacodes

January 28, 2025 – Civil society organizations (CSOs) have expressed outrage over the Nigerian government’s spending of over ₦16 billion on estacodes and compensations in just two years.

This expenditure, which includes ₦7.41 billion allocated for compensating individuals affected by government projects, has sparked calls for greater transparency and accountability in public spending.

The CSOs argue that the significant amount spent on estacodes—allowances provided to government officials for travel expenses—should be redirected towards nation-building initiatives rather than luxury trips.

Critics have highlighted that such lavish spending occurs amidst ongoing economic challenges facing the country, including rising food prices and inflation.

In a statement, a representative from one of the advocacy groups remarked, If only governance moved as fast as MDAs spending₦16 billion on estacodes! Nigerians must demand transparency because public funds should build the nation, not bankroll luxury trips.

The criticism comes at a time when the Nigerian government is under pressure to demonstrate fiscal responsibility. Advocacy groups are urging stricter oversight of government spending, particularly regarding travel allowances for public officials.

They emphasize that the focus should be on addressing pressing issues such as poverty and infrastructure development.

Auwal Ibrahim Rafsanjani, executive director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), condemned the current practices, stating that civil servants should be held accountable for their role in perpetuating corruption within the system. This is pure sabotage, he said, referring to the misuse of public funds.

In response to the backlash, government officials have defended the expenditures as necessary for facilitating official duties and international representation. However, they face increasing scrutiny from both civil society and the general public regarding the justification of such high costs during a time of economic hardship.

As calls for transparency and accountability grow louder, the Nigerian government faces a critical juncture in its financial management practices.

The ongoing debate over estacode expenditures highlights broader concerns about governance and public trust in leadership. With civil society organizations leading the charge for reform, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these pressing demands for change.
