Cotonou in Turmoil: Soldiers Attempt Coup Against President Patrice Talon

An attempted coup is reportedly underway in Cotonou, Benin Republic, following an early-morning assault on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Local media outlet TchadOne reported that the attack was led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri. The officer later appeared on national television which appeared to be under military control declaring himself as “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.”

Tension remains high in Cotonou, with witnesses reporting a heavy military presence around strategic locations, including government buildings and key roadways.

As of now, President Talon and his administration have not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the unfolding political crisis.

The attempted power grab raises concerns about increasing political instability in West Africa, a region that has witnessed multiple military interventions in recent years. TchadOne has pledged continuous updates as the situation develops.
