Court Grants Former AMCON Boss Ahmed Kuru Permission to Travel to UK for Medical Treatment Amid ₦76bn Fraud Trial

The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has granted former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, permission to travel to the United Kingdom for urgent medical treatment.

Justice Mojisola Dada approved the application on July 30, 2025, following a request from Kuru’s legal team. The judge ordered the temporary release of Kuru’s international passport to facilitate the trip.

The ruling comes despite objections from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which raised concerns that the trip might be linked to alleged attempts to secretly dispose of aircraft belonging to Arik Air assets central to the ongoing ₦76 billion fraud case.

Kuru, along with co-defendants Kamilu Omokide, Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Union Bank, and Super Bravo Limited, is facing multiple charges including conspiracy, theft, abuse of office, and fraudulent conversion of public funds. All the defendants have pleaded not guilty and remain on bail in the sum of ₦20 million each.

The EFCC had earlier filed a motion seeking to restrict the assets of the defendants during the pendency of the case, but the court declined the request, citing insufficient evidence to justify such an order.

The case remains ongoing, with the trial expected to resume in the coming weeks as the court continues to weigh the allegations and defenses presented by both parties.
