Crisis Brews in Edo Over Alleged Sale of Communal Plots
Tension is rising in Iguelegbon community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, following allegations that about 400 plots of communal land were sold without the consent of the wider community.
Some youths and elders accused Dr. Taiwo Aifuwa, described as a former youth chairman of the community, of being linked to the transaction.
Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, Convener of Concerned Edo Youths, Comrade Gbale Joseph, said petitions had already been submitted to the police and the Oba of Benin’s palace. He urged the Edo State Government to strengthen enforcement of the Private Property Protection Law to curb unlawful land sales.
“No part of Iguelegbon community should be touched without the community’s approval. We trust the palace committee to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Joseph stated.
However, Dr. Aifuwa denied any involvement, insisting that land matters are handled strictly by the community’s elders. He maintained that he remains the recognised youth chairman and described the allegations as “baseless.”
“I am not in any way involved in the said sale. I have always conducted community affairs with integrity,” he said.
The palace committee, headed by Chief Osaro Idah, has been tasked with reviewing the complaints as residents await the outcome.
