David Justice Opens Up on Why His Marriage to Halle Berry Ended

Former Major League Baseball star David Justice has spoken candidly about his brief marriage to Hollywood actress Halle Berry, revealing the factors that led to their split.

Justice, who married Berry in 1993 after a whirlwind romance, said the relationship began in a “honeymoon state” but soon faced challenges. Speaking on Thursday’s episode of the All The Smoke podcast, he admitted that doubts emerged early about whether Berry was the right partner to start a family with.

The ex-athlete, who grew up with traditional Midwest values, said he expected a wife to “cook, clean, [and be] traditional,” but found Berry didn’t share those traits. “She didn’t cook, didn’t clean, didn’t really seem motherly,” Justice recalled, noting this created early tension in the marriage.

Berry proposed just five months into their relationship, and while Justice accepted, he confessed he wasn’t sure his heart was fully in it. “I couldn’t say no… I didn’t want to make her feel bad,” he said.

The couple’s demanding careers added further strain. Berry’s film projects frequently took her abroad, while Justice’s baseball schedule kept him traveling across the United States. “We spent a lot of time apart… she was doing movies in this country, that country,” he said.

Reflecting on their split, Justice believes therapy might have saved their marriage. “We honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it,” he said.

Berry and Justice first met in 1992 when she spotted him at an MTV celebrity baseball game and passed her number to him through a mutual friend. Despite their instant connection, the romance ultimately faltered under the weight of distance, career pressures, and mismatched expectations.
