Deadly Robbery in Abuja: One Killed, Two Injured as Police Foil Night Attack in Apo Resettlement

Tragedy struck in the Apo Resettlement area of Abuja on the night of Sunday, June 23, 2025, when a gang of armed robbers launched a violent attack that left one resident dead and two others critically injured.

The swift response of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, however, prevented what could have been a far more devastating outcome.

The brazen attack occurred around 10:30 PM in the Zone E Extension of Apo Resettlement, a residential community located within Nigeria’s capital territory.

According to a statement released by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police were alerted to the incident through a distress call placed by a commercial motorcyclist who reported hearing heavy gunfire in the area.

Upon receiving the alert, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Apo Division, CSP Uchenna Igwebuike, promptly mobilised the station’s Ambush and Surveillance Teams to the location. The officers arrived to find the community under siege and immediately engaged the armed robbers in a fierce gun battle.

Reinforcements led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, soon arrived, escalating the tactical response.

With coordinated firepower and superior strategy, the police managed to overpower the attackers, who fled into the nearby hills under intense pressure.

Three victims, who had sustained varying degrees of injuries from the assailants, were rescued during the operation. A light green Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 620 AU belonging to one of the victims was recovered at the crime scene.

Emergency medical teams rushed the wounded victims to Sahad Hospital in Apo for urgent treatment. Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival and was pronounced dead. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital morgue.

In the wake of the incident, the FCT Police Command launched a joint manhunt operation in collaboration with local vigilante groups to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects hiding within the hilly terrain.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents across the Federal Capital Territory.

He also urged members of the public particularly those living in and around the Apo Resettlement area to remain alert and report any suspicious persons or individuals with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913 or 08028940883.

“The safety of our residents is our top priority,” CP Adewale stated. “We call on all citizens to stay vigilant, law-abiding, and to partner with us in flushing out criminal elements from our communities.”

The FCT Police Command has assured the public that full investigations are underway and that no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
