Debate Intensifies Over Proposed Creation of Anioma State and Its Impact on Nigeria’s Southeast Region

The proposed creation of Anioma State which seeks to carve out a new state in the southeast geopolitical zone from parts of Delta State, has sparked a robust debate over its potential impact on regional politics ethnic representation, and national cohesion.

The Anioma State proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko and backed by at least 85 senators in the 10th National Assembly aims to address what proponents describe as a historical imbalance. The Southeast currently has five states whereas other geopolitical zones have six or seven.

Supporters argue that creating Anioma State would ensure fairer representation, better resource allocation and promote national unity by addressing long-standing grievances of the Igbo nation.

The new state would encompass nine local government areas, including Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North-East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South and Ukwuani with Asaba as its capital.

Advocates also point out that Asaba has substantial infrastructure that can serve efficiently as the state’s administrative hub.

However, the proposal has not been without controversy. Some local Delta State lawmakers and stakeholders have expressed reservations, citing political rivalries and concerns over the division of resources and loyalties within the region. Critics question whether the proposal may deepen regional divisions or lead to instability.

Traditional rulers from the Ndigbo Progressive Forum have expressed support, viewing the creation as a historic step toward equity and justice for the Anioma people.

The proposal is currently under constitutional review, with plans for zonal public hearings and a possible referendum among the affected populations.

The debate over the Anioma State creation highlights broader national conversations about federalism ethnic inclusion and equitable governance.

As the legislative process unfolds all eyes are on how this initiative will shape the political dynamics in Nigeria’s southeast and the country as a whole.
